When The Redbuds Bloom

music & lyrics by Sarah Elizabeth Burkey copyright 2005
from the album When the Redbuds Bloom

there's a place i remember   a time i often recall
before the countryside was overtaken by suburban sprawl
daughter when will you be back this way?   when should i look for you?
dad look across the field cause you'll be seeing me soon
i'll be home when the redbuds bloom

pappy caught a man stealing corn from his crib
so he asked if he was hungry and invited him in
he gave him what little we had in the kitchen
that man never stole corn from pappy again

i live in this old trailer on the side of a dark hill
and wonder everyday if all this suffering is God's will
i want to save up all my money and buy a piece of land
but every hard earned dollar goes right back to the man

everyone divorced and died before i was five years old
what was taken from us?   what were we taken from?
a rich ancestry that i have never known
all my life i've wandered backroads trying to find my way home

there's a place i remember   a time i often recall
before the countryside was overtaken by suburban sprawl
daughter when will you be back this way?   when should i look for you?
dad look across the field cause you'll be seeing me soon
i'll be home when the redbuds bloom
